Japanese Balloon Bombs across Western U.S. in WWII

Writer's picture: deadheadcutflowersdeadheadcutflowers

The fictional Henry (in Tilden) found a Japanese Balloon Bomb along the reservoir edge, no evidence exists that any of the 9000 incendiaries reached the area--though scuttlebutt over the years has said otherwise. One was documented in Thermopolis, in Canada, in Mexico and as far east as Michigan, and one killed inquisitive picnickers on May 5, 1945 in Oregon, the only Americans killed in WWII on US soil. Only about 300 of the bombs were ever accounted for, and none started the hoped-for forest fires--perhaps because trees don't burn as well in the winter, when the bombs were sent over.
